The Coober Pedy Historical Society maintains the town’s physical and online archive, a collection of documents and photographs that has been recognised by the National Library of Australia as being of national significance.
The Society promotes the history of the town and opal fields through:
- books written and published by members,
- displays at the Visitor Information Centre, Gem Trade Show and Opal Festival
- outings that are researched and presented free of charge to locals and visitors.
